Infant killed, drivers hospitalized from horrific Valley Cottage crash Tuesday

An infant died and drivers of both vehicles are recovering from critical injuries after a horrific collision between a car and a box truck on Route 303 in Valley Cottage Tuesday morning.

The Clarkstown Police Department said a white Ford commercial box truck collided with a black Nissan Pathfinder headed south on Route 303 near Hillside Lane at the border of Valley Cottage and West Nyack around 8:50 a.m. Police say the car driver, a 31-year-old woman, had her 1-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son as passengers.

Det. Norm Peters, a Clarkstown police spokesman, said the victims were taken to Montefiore Nyack Hospital and transferred to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.

The infant sustained life-threatening injuries and died after life-saving measures at Westchester Medical Center.

Peters said both the car driver and the truck driver, who is male, are still recovering from critical injuries. The 3-year-old suffered minor injuries. None of the passengers' identities have been released by authorities, pending notification of their family members.

Officials said all the victims were removed from the crash by 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Police closed parts of Route 303 from Lake Road to N. Palisades Center Drive while emergency officials attempted to rescue the infant and the truck driver. The road was closed for around seven hours as the investigation continued.
