Acclaimed Queer Novel 'Young Mungo' To Get TV Adaptation From A24
The beloved queer novel Young Mungo might be headed to TV in the near future.
A24 announced that they are working on an adaptation of Douglas Stuart’s 2022 novel yesterday, fresh off the heels of their Oscar sweep this month.
Set in Scotland, Young Mungo follows Mungo and James, born to very different working-class families, as they first become best friends and then gradually fall in love against all odds. Their dreams of escaping Glasgow to be together are at odds with the dangerous, hyper-masculine world they live in, leading to a beautiful yet tragic journey for the two young men.
The book came out just last year, but has already gained a devoted fanbase due to the rich storytelling and relatable characters. It marks the second novel for Stuart, after Shuggie Bain, which is also currently being developed into a series with A24.

With LGBTQ+ shows — albeit primarily ones centered around women — getting canceled left and right, seeing companies still willing to invest in trying to bring these stories to the screen is heartening. Now if only networks and streamers would give them the marketing, budgets, and support they need to thrive.
