Accounting firm investigates unauthorized software on company tech.

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – A former employee of a Lansing-based accounting firm is accused of placing ‘unauthorized’ software on employee mobile phones and laptops.

Maner Costerisan President Trey Williams confirmed with 6 News Tuesday the accounting firm “learned of a potential breach of some employees’ private information via personal mobile devices and isolated instances in which unauthorized software was installed on employees’ laptops, we immediately investigated.”

In a statement, he said the situation had been referred to the Michigan State Police to investigate. The investigation is ongoing.

Williams said the company also hired a third-party company to review the situation and provide recommendations on remedying any breaches and preventing future concerns.

“While we remain aware of no misuse of any employee’s financial information or information related to identity theft, we made available credit protection/monitoring services,” Williams’ statement said.

As for the person who allegedly put the software on individual’s work electronics “no longer works at Maner Costerisan.”

“We are both angry and sorry this occurred,” he said in the statement. “Our employees’ security is of utmost concern.”

He declined to provide any more details on the situation, calling it “sensitive.”

However, communications from the company to employees obtained by 6 News show the company learned of the breach in mid-July.

In August, the company told employees, “Based on what we know now, no client information as involved.”
