Accused kidnapper caught in Virginia

Oct. 25—HIGH POINT — A High Point man wanted on attempted murder, kidnapping and other charges in a local case was arrested this week in Virginia with the young woman he reportedly abducted.

A witness told the High Point Police Department on Monday night that a man came into his home in the southern part of the city about 9:40 p.m., forced the 17-year-old woman at knifepoint to leave with him and drove off. Police said that the man and woman knew each other.

Police issued arrest warrants for Fransisco De Jesus Delgado Arevalo, 18, and sent a notice to other agencies in several states to watch for Arevalo's vehicle.

About 1 a.m. Tuesday, two officers in Christiansburg, Virginia, spotted Arevalo's vehicle and followed it onto Interstate 81, where Arevalo turned off his headlights and tried to speed away, a Christiansburg Police Department press release said. Two other police officers and two Virginia State Police troopers joined the chase, which ended when Arevalo wrecked.

The woman was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to recover, High Point police say.

Arevalo was charged in High Point with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and communicating threats. He was charged in Virginia with being a fugitive from justice, eluding police, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and misuse of 911 system.

Due to the nature of the case and the victim's age, no additional information was released, the High Point police said Wednesday.
