Suspect accused of shooting Henry County detention officer, killing man arrested at Georgia motel

The man accused of shooting a Henry County detention officer and killing a man is now in custody.

The US Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Brentson Thomas at a hotel in Macon on Sunday afternoon. The task force said it made the arrest with assistance from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a news conference Monday morning to discuss the arrest. Channel 2 Action News will have a crew at the news conference and bring you the latest on Channel 2 Action News at Noon.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said Thomas shot a detention officer and another man several times at an apartment complex in McDonough earlier this month.

The officer, only identified as Officer Williams, was flown to the hospital in critical condition, but was listed as stable. The second man, who has not been identified, died from his injuries.

Thomas had been on the run since the shooting after he left the scene in a Toyota Camry, which was later located in Atlanta.

Investigators said he also had help avoiding capture. Lashonda Lay and Joseph Kimber are charged with Felony Hindering Apprehension of a Fugitive accused of helping Thomas.

Investigators say a third person, Dimarie Coulter, had been actively helping Thomas since the shooting. Coulter is still on the run.

Deputies obtained warrants charging Thomas with one count of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.
