Aces of Trades: Esthetician and nurse Terri Grove is driven to boost women's confidence

WEST LAFAYETTE – She has a passion to uplift people’s confidence.

“I grew up in an industrious family,” recalled Terri Grove. “I recognized the importance of hard work early on. Being a natural people pleaser from a young age, I always envisioned a career focused on helping others and making a positive impact. Initially I always thought I would go into the social work field, driven by a genuine desire to contribute to people’s wellbeing.

“As a teenager,” she continued, “I found joy in doing my friends’ hair and makeup, sparking an early interest in beauty. However, I never considered turning it into a career. Owning my own small business was never something I imagined in a million years. I just figured I would be clocking in and out until retirement.”

Terri Grove opened Palmbay Studio in November. She continues to work as a nurse while operating her own business in West Lafayette.

Today, Grove is owner/esthetician at Palmbay Studio in West Lafayette.

“I opened Palmbay Studio in November of 2023,” she said. “The decision to launch a solo esthetic studio and work independently stemmed from my desire to offer personalized services that align with my genuine interest in assisting women with specific skincare/beauty needs.”

The name Palmbay, by the way, came from her children’s names.

“I thought so long about what to name my little business,” she explained. “I feel like there’s a lot that goes into a name. So one day I was writing names down and I combined my children’s names. Palmer and Banks equals Palmbay. It just clicked. The fusion felt right, and it holds such a personal significance to me. Plus, my 7-year-old thinks it’s the coolest thing ever.”

Grove grew up near Plainfield, graduated from Ridgewood High School in 2006, earned a degree in nursing from OSU Newark, then plunged into esthetic school at the National Beauty College in Canton. She graduated and passed the boards in 2023.

“I still work as a nurse,” she said. “Surprisingly, the idea of becoming a nurse or esthetician never crossed my mind during the formative years. In high school the emphasis on obtaining a degree to succeed influenced my choices, diverting my thoughts away from cosmetology/esthetic school. Opting for nursing school provided a secure and versatile career path, and most of my nursing journey focused on women’s health, which I truly love.

“While exploring different nursing avenues,” she added, “I realized my passion lies in empowering women and helping enhance their confidence. This realization led me to pursue esthetics, driven by a personal journey dealing with skin concerns and a genuine desire to understand the intricacies of esthetics.”

Erica Mesler is a longtime friend.

“Terri’s passion for helping others shines through in her work at Palmbay Studio,” assessed Mesler. “As a natural caregiver, she offers more than just talent as an esthetician. She goes above and beyond to ensure you have a truly special experience. Our community is so lucky to have her.”

“I never would have guessed at 35 years old I would be starting a whole new career,” she concluded. “I’m so grateful with where I am. I have a healthy family, a roof over my head, and each day I get to do something I love – and I’ll continue to do it as long as my clients allow me to.”
