"We just wanted to do something and work for ourselves," Mowery said. "We worked so hard for so many other people, we wanted to provide some good hearty food. We're just sick of going around town and getting a junk meal and paying so much money for it."

That was the genesis behind Munchy Junkies, their new food trailer based at 1649 E. Main St. near Beverage Express.

"We know how hard it is to work all day and you've got to stop and get something," Mowery said. "We just want to give you a nice big fat sandwich, a good hearty bowl of soup and something like that. We want people to get their money's worth for their food."

The Munchy Junkies menu features 10-ounce burgers, gyros, shrimp rolls, soups, salads and more.

"It's kind of the food you would go to a pub to get," Daugherty said. "Or a little café, because I have a wide range of things I can do."

Daugherty learned his craft by going to culinary school at Hocking College in the late '90s before working at high-end restaurants in Florida.

"He got to hone his skills and learn a lot of different things down there," Mowery said. "He came back to Ohio and we had an opportunity (for their own business)."

Daugherty also worked at a local restaurant to further learn the business before he and Mowery opened Munchy Junkies. Mowery was also experienced in the service industry by working as a bartender and working in food prep at various places.

The business has gone well so far.

"The same people keep coming back and encouraging us," Mowery said. "And then we see new faces all the time. It's really great. It's just him and I doing our best, working other jobs and trying to keep this going. It's really great. We get to learn more and grow more. We've done this for so long pretty much all aspects of it, but now we get to actually be the business owners and run it."

Daugherty said he and Mowery eventually want to open a diner.

Munchy Junkies is open from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It's open from 2 to 9 pm. Saturday and closed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

Visit the business's Facebook page for any upcoming changes in operating hours.
