ACLU ends battle on 24-hour waiting period for abortion

Good morning,

On Friday afternoon, Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa announced they were giving up the legal fight against the 24-hour waiting period for abortions.

The 2020 waiting period law was the subject of several major legal decisions. A lower court blocked the law at first, but then the Iowa Supreme Court overturned that decision in June. Abortion providers across the state immediately put the waiting period into effect, although they say the law harms patients.

Mazie Stilwell, public affairs director for Planned Parenthood in Iowa, said the ACLU and Planned Parenthood will focus their energy on other upcoming challenges to abortion. Courts reporter William Morris has the full scoop on the legal ramifications of the waiting period law — and the current legal landscape for abortion in Iowa.

Meanwhile in D.C., the Senate worked through the weekend on a climate, health care and tax spending bill. Democrats pushed the bill through a "vote-a-rama," which is essentially an unlimited lightning round for amendments. Our USA Today reporters have a full rundown on the bill and its progress in Congress.

Looking ahead: The Iowa State Fair begins on Thursday, and we'll be hosting more than a dozen candidates at our Political Soapbox. Each candidate will have 20 minutes to make their pitch to fairgoers. The full Soapbox schedule is available online. We'll also have coverage and video recordings at DesMoinesRegister.com/Soapbox.

It's politics reporter Katie Akin, ready for State Fair shenanigans and my beloved egg on a stick. To follow our coverage in the busy week ahead, follow the Register on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Feel free to reach out to me via email: kakin@registermedia.com.
