Acme shopping center in Milltown will be demolished for apartments

MILLTOWN – A Ryders Lane shopping center, which includes Acme, will be demolished, paving the way for 190 apartments, which includes 38 affordable units.

The Planning Board unanimously approved Arisa Urban Renewal's plan to build the development on about 8.96 acres with frontage on Ryders Lane, County Route 617 and the New Jersey Turnpike, at its March 16 meeting.

The apartments will be housed in six three-story buildings with a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments.

The property is part of the borough's settlement of its affordable housing litigation.

At the January hearing on the application, which continued in March, Kenneth Pape, attorney for Arisa, said Acme did not choose to renew its lease.

The Acme and the other stores in the shopping center will be demolished.

The affordable apartments, which will be mixed in with the market rate apartments, will feature seven one-bedroom units, 23 two-bedroom units and eight three-bedroom units.

Arisa, headquartered on Canal Street in Manhattan, also owns the neighboring property where Target is, which is not included in the plan.
