Get in on the action by sponsoring a Polar Plunger

Feb. 9—Brave souls will once again be taking the polar plunge to raise money for Haywood Waterways Association Kids in the Creek program and environmental education.

The public can get in on the fun by choosing individuals or teams to sponsors with a donation. More than 40 individual participants and more than a dozen teams — from school groups to local nonprofits — have already signed up to take the plunge.

Donors can peruse a list of participants online and choose which ones to contribute to. (see instructions below) Prizes and bragging rights are awarded to the top fundraisers.

The 11th annual Plunge will be held from 11:30 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Champion Credit Union Aquatics Center in Canton. The depth of a plunge is a personal choice, from a dip of the toe to full-immersion jump off the diving board.

Costumes are encouraged, with prizes awarded for best costumes. This year's award categories are: top three school teams, top three individuals, top three community teams, top three best costumes and team with the most plungers.

Co-hosted by the Haywood Waterways Association and the Town of Canton, the event is Haywood Waterways' biggest and most important fundraiser of the year. The plunge supports the Kids in the Creek program, which provides an annual hands-on field trip for every eighth grader in Haywood County to learn about water quality up-close-and-personal.

Other fun activities will be on hand during the event, including Base Camp on the Go outdoor activities truck, Zorb balls, obstacle course, GaGa Ball pit, bonfires, DJ Master P and Bona Fide bluegrass band.

It's not too late to sign up as a plunger. The cost is $35, or $10 for under 18. All plungers receive a free hand towel to commemorate their bravery.

Registration begins at 10a.m. and walk-ups are welcome. Advance registration for plungers is available at www.haywoodwa-terways.com or contact 828-476-4667 or info@haywoodwaterways.org.
