Active Coronavirus Cases Drop Below 1,000 In Rockland

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — As the coronavirus outbreak continues in Rockland County, enforcement efforts have taken a two-pronged approach, said County Executive Ed Day in a briefing Tuesday.

County officials have asked the state task force to provide the data about their actions in the past couple of weeks but have not heard back, Day said.

As for the local efforts, "We are making a difference, that is clear," Day said.

The county's health commissioner's order requires schools, adult-education programs and school buses to enforce mask-wearing among students and staff. It builds on the governor's orders, which allow a fine to be issued to a person not wearing a mask, regulating businesses and institutions responsible for the safety of children.

"We're not going to give an 8-year-old a ticket," Day said.

As of Oct. 26, the county health department had received 97 complaints about 57 separate locations, and inspectors have completed 64 inspections to date, Day said, finding no violation in 60. The latest citation was served Monday to Yeshiva Tiferes Schmuel in Suffern after inspectors saw more than a dozen teens standing close together outside the school, most without masks, on Oct. 23.

Rockland's current outbreak is definitely subsiding, he pointed out: the county had 915 active cases as of Monday, down from a peak of 1,649 cases 18 days ago.

According to data released Monday by state health officials, Rockland's micro-cluster continues to subside.

Day reminded those watching his briefing on Facebook that the county's COVID-19 Hotline 845-238-1956 is available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and it's also possible to email COVIDCallCenter@co.rockland.ny.us. The NYS COVID-19 24-hour hotline is 1-888-364-3065.
