Active COVID-19 cases increase by 181 as South Dakota reports eight deaths

South Dakota's COVID-19 deaths climbed by eight, the Department of Health reported Monday, while 575 additional people tested positive for the coronavirus.

The latest deaths took the statewide total to 2,328. Two of them were 60-69, one was 70-79 and the remaining five were 80 or older. Five were men and three were women.

Active infections climbed to 7,253, an increase of 181 over the previous report on the day before Thanksgiving. Monday's report reflected cases numbers from a 24-hour period on Wednesday and Thursday.

New cases increased by 166 in Minnehaha County. Lincoln County had 44 new cases, Brown County had 18 and Codington County, 19. Pennington County saw 64.

The number of hospital beds occupied by a COVID-19 positive patient increased to 234. Sixty-seven of those were receiving intensive care, with 39 on ventilators.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 58% of the state's eligible population is fully vaccinated.
