Active COVID cases fall for third day in a row as South Dakota reports 5 deaths

The South Dakota Department of Health reported five additional deaths of people with COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the pandemic total to 2,623.

The latest deaths included three people aged 60-69 and two 70-79. Three were women and two were men.

Occupied hospital beds increased to 404, eight more than the previous day. Seventy-four of those were intensive care beds, 13 fewer than Wednesday.

The department reported an additional 1,358 new coronavirus infections. A total of 187,763 have tested positive in the state, a number that is likely far lower than the total.

Active infections decreased for a third straight day. The department reported 2,134 new recoveries, and there were 34,753 active cases.

An additional 244 people received a first dose of COVID vaccine through the state vaccination program. Sixty-three percent of the state's eligible population is fully vaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
