'Active shooter' is shot, killed by officers at Kennedy Middle School in Germantown, Wisconsin DOJ says

An "active shooter" incident occurred at Kennedy Middle School Monday night, the Germantown Police Department said.

An officer with the department said no injuries occurred at the school, but the Wisconsin Department of Justice issued a statement around midnight saying the suspected shooter was shot by Germantown officers shortly after 6:36 p.m. The DOJ said aid was rendered but the suspected shooter died at the scene.

All Germantown schools were closed on Tuesday.

Classes will be canceled again for Kennedy Middle School students Wednesday, while other Germantown students return to their schools.

In a message to families Tuesday, Superintendent Chris Reuter said there will be no access to the middle school until further notice.

Police initially responded to the school, located at N118 W15860 Williams Drive in Washington County, for a report of a subject "acting erratically" in the parking lot of the school. The DOJ said the person was able to climb onto the roof of the school and two officers pursued on foot.

The person discharged their firearm and officers returned fire, according to the DOJ.

The incident caused a large law enforcement response as the Germantown School District released a statement at about 8:40 p.m. saying the school was in lockdown and all students were being transported by bus to MacArthur Elementary. Parents were reunited with their children there.

The DOJ said about 50 to 70 students were inside the school at the time of the shooting.

The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol.
