Standoff over in Dale County

DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — A standoff in the 200 block of Hartford Street in Newton is over.

Dale County Sheriff Mason Bynum confirmed the standoff was over, and the man was in custody at 6:40 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Bynum, the standoff began at around 4:00 p.m. after deputies went to the home on Hartford Street to take the unidentified man on an involuntary mental health order.

Sheriff Bynum tells WDHN the man refused to go with deputies and barricaded himself inside one of the rooms of his home after retrieving a handgun.

In a press release, Sheriff Bynum said the man was finally taken into custody with “minimal force.” He was then taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
