Activist Erin Brockovich to keynote 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship's Women's Day event

Erin Brockovich, the environmental activist who rose to fame after winning the largest direct-action lawsuit in United States' history, will be the keynote speaker at the 2023 Sanderson Farms Championship's Women's Day luncheon.

The Country Club of Jackson will host Brockovich on Tuesday, Oct. 3. She will speak on "her experiences seeking justice for victims of environmental wrongdoing," according to a press release from the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Brockovich rose in prominence after becoming a whistleblower in 1993 after discovering groundwater contamination in the town of Hinkley, California. The Pacific Gas and Electric Company, a utility giant, had dumped 370 million gallons of chromium-tainted wastewater for over 30 years, which spread into Hinkley's groundwater and caused residents to become sick. Brockovich, who was working as a legal clerk for the law firm Masry & Vititoe, sued the company and in 1996 secured a settlement of $333 million for more than 600 Hinkley residents who had been affected by the toxic pollutants. It is still the largest direct-action settlement in U.S. history.

Her stardom grew even more in 2000 when the eponymous movie "Erin Brockovich" hit theaters and told her story to the masses. Julia Roberts starred as Brockovich and won the award for Best Actress for her portrayal at the 73rd Academy Awards.

Today, Brockovich is a media personality, author and president of Brockovich Research & Consulting. Her company is involved in numerous environmental projects worldwide and is currently working on cases in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri.
