Activists Keep Vigil as First Woman in Nearly 70 Years Is Executed by Federal Government
Anti-death penalty activists kept vigil on the night of January 12 and 13 outside the Federal Correctional Complex in Terre Haute, Indiana, as the federal government executed the first woman in almost 70 years for murder.
Lisa Montgomery, 52, was pronounced dead at 1.31am on Wednesday, local media reported. She was killed by lethal injection.
Montgomery’s lawyer, Kelley Henry, was quoted in media reports as saying, “The government stopped at nothing in its zeal to kill this damaged and delusional woman,” adding that Montgomery suffered from severe mental illness. “Lisa Montgomery’s execution was far from justice,” Henry was quoted as saying in a statement.
Montgomery was convicted of killing a pregnant woman before cutting out and kidnapping her baby in Missouri in 2004.
