Activists projected the words “Trump failed us” onto an Arizona mountain as the president returned to the state to campaign.

A combination of liberal groups set up the light show on Camelback Mountain in Phoenix with just one week left until election day.

The stunt was organised to attack Mr Trump’s poor handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which has taken more than 232,000 lives and seen more than 9 million cases.

“In these final days of the 2020 election, we are literally putting a spotlight on just how disastrous Donald Trump's presidency has been for Arizona, and for America as a whole,”said Emily Kirkland, the executive director of Progress Arizona.

"We hope it serves as a reminder to voters of how much is at stake this year.”

The 90-minute light show also condemned the White House’s policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the border.

"Trump took 5,400 kids. Stop cruelty. Vote Nov 3rd" read the message.

The president is holding a string of Make America Great Again rallies across the state on Wednesday before travelling to Florida.
