Veteran actor John Amos — of “Good Times” and “Coming to America” fame — is refuting claims of elder abuse made by his daughter, after he was hospitalized in Memphis last month.

In May, Amos was hospitalized in Memphis, with what his representatives said were issues with “fluids filling his body." Amos’ rep Belinda Foster of AWJ Platinum PR told website TMZ that doctors had addressed the issue and that Amos is back in good health.

However, on Thursday, Amos’ daughter Shannon Amos started a GoFundMe on his behalf, claiming the actor was the victim of “elder abuse and financial exploitation.”

On her Instagram page, Shannon Amos said on May 14, she received a “distressing call” from her father “that he was hospitalized in Memphis in immense pain.”

Shannon Amos' post claimed her father was in “ICU…his life hanging by a thread.” She added that her father was a victim elder abuse and that she was "collaborating with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and local authorities determined to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

Shannon Amos did not name the alleged abusers, only identifying one as a “caregiver.” She then established GoFundMe page on behalf of John Amos and set a $500,000 goal (so far it has raised just under $10,000).

However, within hours of Shannon Amos' post and GoFundMe launch, John Amos’ reps shot down the story and later issued a statement from Amos himself to multiple media outlets.

"I wish to make a statement for the record that I am doing well,” Amos said. “I appreciate everyone's concerns but again, please understand that this GoFundMe campaign is not one that is accurate or authorized by me.”

Shannon Amos responded with another — since deleted —social media post in which she wrote: "All due respect to my father's response, I understand that this is embarrassing and upsetting, and probably not what he would have wanted me to do, but it is in his best interest."

The Commercial Appeal has reached out to Shannon Amos for comment.

On May 12, during a press conference at The Peabody hotel in Memphis, it was announced that Amos would be in the Mid-South shooting “Hillbilly Bible,” a faith-based film. Amos’ son, K.C. Amos, is directing the feature, which is being produced by Memphian Marie Pizano.

Pizano’s company also confirmed a production of a documentary about Memphis civil rights leader and attorney Walter Bailey, with Amos and his son attached.
