Michael K. Williams, the actor beloved for his role on The Wire, died from an accidental drug overdose, according to the medical examiner’s report.
The medical examiner of New York ruled that Williams died accidentally of "acute intoxication by the combined effects of fentanyl, p-fluorofentanyl, heroin and cocaine." Family members found him dead at the age of 54 in his New York City apartment on Sept. 6.
Williams was open about his past experience with addiction. In a 2017 interview with the New York Times, he talked about how his reliance on cocaine almost cost him his role as Omar Little on The Wire. It followed him throughout his career, and he got clean and then relapsed several times.
“Addiction doesn’t go away,” he said. “It’s an everyday struggle for me, but I’m fighting.”
Critics praised his portrayal of nuanced characters. His death prompted an outpouring of support from fans and celebrities.
