With help from a sports legend who knows a thing or two about coming out of retirement, Cameron Diaz’ eight-year break from filmmaking is officially over.

Diaz, a star of many 1990s and 2000s movies, including “There’s Something About Mary” and “Charlie’s Angels,” last appeared in the 2014 film “Annie.” One of her co-stars from that movie, Jamie Foxx, announced on Wednesday, June 29, that Diaz is coming out of retirement to join him in an upcoming Netflix film.

Foxx posted an audio recording from a phone call he had with Diaz, and the two were joined by Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady.

“I was talking to Jamie and he said you need a few tips on how to un-retire,” said Brady, whose February retirement from the NFL was short lived. “I’m relatively successful at un-retiring.”

“Honestly ... exactly what I needed,” Diaz replied in the phone call.

Diaz confirmed her retirement for the first time in a 2018 interview with Entertainment Weekly. Speaking to Gwyneth Paltrow in 2020 about her retirement, Diaz said she was at “peace” with her decision.

Since her retirement, she married musician Benji Madden and became a mother.

“When you’re making a movie, it’s a perfect excuse. They own you,” she told Paltrow, Vanity Fair reported. “You’re there for 12 hours a day. For months on end, you have no time for anything else. I realized I handed off parts of my life to all these other people and they took it.”

“I had to basically take it back and take responsibility for my own life. That’s my job,” she added. “There’s a lot of things I had to iron out, a lot of relationships I had to repair, a lot of relationships I had to build that were absent in my life.”

Diaz coming out of retirement was confirmed in social media posts by Netflix. She’ll star alongside Foxx in the appropriately titled “Back in Action.”

Production on the upcoming movie will begin later this year, Foxx said on Twitter. The plot for the action comedy film is being kept under wraps.

Diaz said on Instagram only Foxx could get her out of retirement.

“I can’t frickin wait it’s gonna be a blast,” she said.
