After 27 years, actress Rena Sofer has returned to “General Hospital,” reprising her role as the fast-talking Lois Cerullo, known as much for her signature, outfit-coordinated nails as she is by her molasses-thick Brooklyn accent.

Though Sofer has been in everything from “Seinfeld” to “NCIS” since those days, the actress said Lois has always been especially dear to her heart.

“Lois is probably one of the top three characters I’ve ever played in 37 years of being an actress,” the 54-year-old told Soap Opera Digest of the role that earned her a Daytime Emmy. “To be able to go back and do it was unreal.”

Sofer’s return to help her daughter Brook Lynn deal with fallout from being fired from a coveted job comes just in time to perhaps jog the memory of her character’s former husband, Ned, also known as Eddie Maine, who has amnesia.

Wally Kurth, who plays Maine, is Sofer’s real-life ex-husband, and they too share a daughter. This made the return more fun as well as a bit nerve-wracking, Sofer said, but everything fell into place as soon as her nails were done.

“At first I think it was really intimidating, what’s it going to be like, who am I going to see, there are going to be people there I haven’t seen in 30 years, I’ll be working with Wally again, I haven’t worked with Wally in 30 years,” she told ABC, which airs the soap. “Once I got through a day, half a day, and got the nails on, and I got the voice, and I got upstairs, and people kind of enjoyed what I was doing, I went OK, I’m good, and it’s just been so much fun since then.”

Sofer’s limited-run return was officially scheduled to begin Tuesday, but was pushed to Wednesday. There has been no official word on how long she’ll stick around.
