Acura Reveals 2021 TLX Sedan Will Get New Platform, Control-Arm Suspension
Acura's 2021 TLX sedan is getting a control-arm front suspension, the type of choice for sports cars.
In addition to the original NSX and other Acuras, this setup was also used in Honda Civics and Accords in the past.
Acura will reveal the TLX in full on Wednesday, May 28.
Acura continues to tease the upcoming 2021 TLX sedan before its official debut later this week. Until then, we'll have to settle for being fed morsels of information. From the image that Acura released, we can see what appears to be a wide and low car and quite obviously a control-arm-type front suspension. Acura has officially announced that the 2021 TLX will have a new, Acura-exclusive platform and that the front suspension will have control arms instead of its predecessor's strut-type front suspension.
In a control-arm suspension, two wishbone-shaped parts locate the wheel instead of the one lower control arm in a strut-type setup. Advantages of control arms over struts include less friction, better wheel control, and a more consistent contact patch under cornering which helps the tire stay in contact with the road. Acura promises precise handling and more grip in corners. Using control-arms in front instead of the more common strut-type suspension used to be common in Acuras. The setup is one that Acura used on the front suspension of the original NSX, the second-generation Legend and Integra, and the TL, the TLX's predecessor, until 2014.
We’ll have to wait until Wednesday, May 28, at 1:00 p.m. EST to get the rest of the TLX story, but from what we've seen so far it looks like a return to form for the brand.
