Which ad won the Super Bowl? Google Trends may have the answer

WASHINTON (DC News Now) — Taylor’s bey may have won the actual Super Bowl but there’s a second competition that’s almost as important.

Super Bowl ads have become one of the largest advertising events of the year. With sponsors paying around $7 million for a spot, it’s safe to assume they’re hoping for some serious eyeballs.

Google Trends lets us see roughly how many people are searching for certain keywords the day after the game, here are the five ads that generated the most searches for their respective brands the morning after the game.

5. Twisters

It’s been 28 years since we watched Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt chase (and be chased) by the biggest storm to ever grace the silver screen. Twisters promises to recapture the thrill of the chase in 2024. According to IMDB the film was written by Mark L. Smith who was a writer on the 2015 film ‘The Revenant’

4. Temu

According to TIME, Temu is an online marketplace based in China. It sells highly discounted goods, shipped directly to customers from China.

Temu ran multiple ads during the Super Bowl to promote their app. While the ads did generate tons of buzz for the brand. However, they also received tons of backlash on Social media for their ad.

One user commented: “Everything about this Temu ad feels like an iPhone game where your credit card number gets stolen”

According to Google Trends, many of the searches ended up at a CBS article discussing a class-action lawsuit against Temu.

3. Wicked

One of Broadway’s most popular shows is finally being adapted to the silver screen. Wicked will star Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The film also stars Ethan Slater, Grande’s current partner after some scandal in 2023.

Slater played the titular character in the Spongebob Squarepants Broadway Musical.

2. Deadpool 3

Sparing no expense, Deadpool 3 bought one of the shortest Super Bowl slots available to promote the full film trailer online. The short ad simply directed viewers to scan a QR code and watch the trailer on Ryan Reynold’s YouTube channel, a rather economical move from the actor and business owner.

Deadpool 3 will feature Reynolds returning to his titular role alongside Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine for the first time since hanging up the claws in 2017’s Logan.

1. The NFL

The clear winner with over 2 million searches was the NFL itself. After a year of declining viewership in 2023 according to ESPN, the NFL saw a significant bump in viewers likely thanks to the attention from a certain popstar.

The NFL itself ran a number of ads for specific products and services such as NFL Sunday Ticket.

One ad featured a ridiculous premise of NFL teams named after birds ‘migrating’ for the off-season, as well as a cameo from famed ‘hot ones’ interviewer Sean Evans.
