Adam Hernandez is running for mayor again.

On Thursday, Hernandez announced his 2024 campaign for Lubbock mayor, his second bid for the seat in as many election cycles.

Hernandez lost to Tray Payne in a five-way mayoral race in May 2022. Hernandez was the second-highest vote-getter in that election, earning about 19% of the vote.

Hernandez is known for his advocacy work across the Hub City, serving as communications chair for Lubbock Compact. Recently, Hernandez has helped lead Lubbock Compact's efforts to decriminalize marijuana in Lubbock through citizen petition.

Hernandez also recently served on the committee which evaluated a failed street bond and recommended the ultimately successful 2022 bond package.

"Mr. Hernandez says his platform will focus on developing a local government that works for all citizens and communities equally, regardless of where they live or their economic or social status, as well as making improvements in public health and safety," a news release from the candidate reads.

"Lubbock has done and still does many things well," he said, "but there are areas where we can do better, and where we should do better.

"No matter where someone lives or how wealthy or not they are, the citizens of Lubbock want to feel like they have leadership that is working for and looking out for them, and many citizens I’ve spoken with over time don’t feel that that’s the case."

Hernandez said if elected he would focus more city attention on mental health issues, dangerous dogs, quality of life in neighborhoods and parks, and solutions to homelessness.

Hernandez is holding a campaign launch at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the city council chambers at Citizens Tower.

The 2024 Lubbock mayoral and city council elections will take place on May 4.
