Adam Mosseri Suggests Power Should Be Shifted Away From Internet Gatekeepers To Content Creators

Adam Mosseri has suggested a groundbreaking shift in power that could change the lives of creators for better or for worse.

During TED2022, the head of Instagram suggested the next decade of social platforms may not favor a concentration of power. Rather Mosseri envisioned a world where content creators have greater control over their audience.

Statement From Mosseri

“Platforms like Instagram have done a lot to empower creators over the last 10 years. My team is obsessed with finding more ways to support creators, but if you accept that as power continues to shift towards creators, or then that’s going to happen because technology will continue to change, then we’re going to have to rethink some things because today creators are too dependent on too few platforms,” Mosseri said.

He continued: “Our role as platforms has to change. I’m not saying that platforms are going to go away. New platforms will certainly arise. Old platforms will certainly fall…Understand the value that creators create so they’ll be increasingly interested in handing more power over to creators. Now you might think it might be surprising coming from me. I think that over the long run what’s best for creators is going to be best for platforms like the one I’m responsible for. The more art there is, the more there’s an exchange of ideas. The more creativity there is in the world, the better off we all are.”

Content Creators Could Create New Lifeline Backed By The Blockchain

Mosseri’s stance encourages an alternative lifeline for creators to sustain their image and brand backed by the blockchain. With technologies constantly evolving and emerging, creators are experiencing a new era. By tapping into the blockchain, creators could embrace an independent platform to connect directly with their fans from their combined social platforms by launching a paid subscription model.

“If we build these membership cards on a blockchain, no company can ever take this community away,” Mosseri said.

Pros And Cons

Mosseri has some substantial points which if put into execution would certainly create a different reality for creators. However, the golden question remains will these changes be for better or for worse?

Creators would certainly have the ability to finance their creative endeavors backed by a community already on standby to invest in their pursuits, by default creating more and better content. A win for all sides however, what would happen to their ventures on traditional platforms if they adopt Mosseri’s suggested model? Money may certainly be lost as there would not be a guarantee followers would shift towards a free platform which already allows them to keep up with their favorite content creators in order to embrace a paid subscription model.

Content creators who have amassed thousands of followers may find success however how would this impact small business owners who already find difficulties branding and securing clients on free platforms?

Mosseri’s stance certainly leaves room for thought. What remains clear, the future is tomorrow and creators should have an open mind to remain ahead of the curve.
