Adam Petway joins Louisville men's basketball as new strength coach

Adam Petway, who has more than a dozen years of experience in the NBA, college sports and track and field, is Louisville men's basketball's new director of strength and conditioning.

“Adam comes to this program highly recommended with a background both in NBA and the track and field world,” Payne said in a release. “His experience will bring a unique and different expertise to Louisville basketball. I am so excited for our players to have Adam lead them into the world of sport-specific movement.”

Petway is the latest addition to Kenny Payne's first U of L staff, joining the program after five months as the horizontal jumps coach and assistant track and field coach at West Chester (Pa.) University.

He previously spent a season as the director of athletic performance for the NBA's Washington Wizards and two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers, first as a strength and conditioning specialist and then as lead biomechanist for strength and conditioning.

Petway also has worked in strength and conditioning for college programs at Arkansas — where he worked with men's basketball from 2014-18 — The Catholic University of America, George Washington and Maryland.

A native of Atlanta, Petway earned a bachelor's degree in sports science from the United State Sports Academy in 2013; an MBA with an emphasis in sport management at the Universidad Europea de Madrid in 2017; and a doctorate in sports science from Universidad Catolica de Murcia in 2021. Petway also studied applied data science through MIT professional education.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work for Coach Kenny Payne and the Men's Basketball Program,” Petway said in a release. “Helping athletes develop has always been a passion of mine, and I am excited to do so with great student-athletes here at The University of Louisville.”
