Adam Schefter breaking Aaron Rodgers trade news on ESPN's 'NFL Live' was priceless

Adam Schefter apparently didn't need Aaron Rodgers' phone number to break the trade news after all.

The ESPN reporter was live on air during an "NFL Live" appearance Monday when he received a notification that the Rodgers trade from the Green Bay Packers to the New York Jets was indeed happening after more than a month of being in limbo.

In a trade that everyone expected to happen for weeks, Schefter played the bit to perfection.

"Aaron Rodgers is going to the New York Jets. It's official," Schefter said while holding his phone. "It is happening. Finally, after all this time. We've been waiting for this trade to happen and now it is."

The shocked reactions by Schefter's colleagues on air were priceless as he was reading off terms of the trade. It became an instant meme.

Rodgers and Schefter, of course, have an interesting history.

Schefter broke the news in 2021 that Rodgers was unhappy and wanted out of Green Bay, based on an "accumulationof information.

Rodgers, never one to shy away from criticizing media members in recent years about coverage, called out Schefter and other reporters before going on his darkness retreat in February.

He was upset that some in the media had the timeline of his retreat wrong and expressed on "The Pat McAfee Show" that, if you're not in his inner circle, you won't have any information about his future.

A month later, as rumors grew about a pending trade to the Jets, Schefter went right to the source this time. Rodgers wasn't having any of it. He replied to Schefter, "Lose my number. Good try tho."

Rodgers revealed the text exchange between the two in an interview on McAfee's show in which he announced his intentions to play for the Jets. Schefter later shared a screenshot of the exchange, confirming it.

Adam Schefter looked to get the scoop on an Aaron Rodgers trade last month when he went right to the quarterback. That didn't work out but, a month later, he got the report anyway.

Rodgers hasn't spoken on podcasts since that March 15 appearance but an introductory news conference is likely coming. ESPN's Dianna Russini tweeted Tuesday that Rodgers is set to arrive in New Jersey Tuesday night.
