Somebody finally beat Adams junior Angel Thomas in a 100-meter dash.  But it took a near-state record to do it.

Indianapolis North Central senior Ramiah Elliott clocked 11.46 seconds to win the 100 during Friday’s girls state finals at the Indiana University track in Bloomington. That was the second-fastest time ever in the history of the state meet, trailing only Pike’s Lynna Irby, who clocked 11.41 in 2017.

In Elliotts’ wake came Thomas, who clocked a blistering 11.91 of her own to finish fourth.  She ran 11.96 in the qualifying heats, proving she would have a good day.

Thomas dominated the 100 in northern Indiana this spring, and, in fact, her clocking in Bloomington would have won five of the last 15 state finals.

►Regional: Penn has the distance in Kokomo girls track regional, but Culver Ac emies take the title

► Sectional: Penn races to girls track sectional title as grieving Saint Joseph gives inspired effort

Thomas, who easily won at the Mishawaka girls sectional and Kokomo regional, had the same official time as third-place Camryn Dunn of Chesterton.  However, a review of the photo finish revealed Dunn edged Thomas by six-one thousandths of a second.

The 100 was one of only three events where Tribune-area girls won award medals Friday.

Michigan City’s Zaira Truvillion joined Thomas on the awards stand in the 100. She finished eighth in 12.13.

LaPorte freshman Lila Gillisse showed her future may be bright in the 3200-meter run, as she finished eighth in a personal best 10:46.22.

And in the 4 x 800 relay, Penn collected a ninth-place finish to also make the awards stand.  Julia Smith, Mary Eubank, Abby Stevens and Julia Economou ran a season-best 9:25.87.

The girls state meet was dominated by central Indiana teams, with Indianapolis North Central scoring 55 points for the win. Noblesville was second with 40.

Three state meet records fell, with Huntington North’s Addison Wiley collecting two of them.  Her 4:38.69 in the 1600-meter run shattered the old standard of 4:43.46 held by Waverly Neer of Culver Academies.  She also won the 800 in a state meet best of 2:06.26.

Forest Park’s Rachel Mehringer set a new state meet record of 13.92 in the 100-meter hurdles.

Local athletes came close but just missed out on medals in a few events.  Elkhart’s Mady Axon finished 10th in the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 4 inches.  Only the top nine finishers won medals.

Penn’s Mary Eubank was 12th in the 3200-meter run.  Economou was 11th in the 800.
