Additional 6 COVID-19 deaths reported in South Dakota as active cases increase by 200

Active COVID-19 infections increased by 200, the South Dakota Department of Health announced Thursday, while six new deaths were included in the report.

A total of 615 new cases were also reported.

The 7,416 active cases remains below the late-summer surge of new cases that occurred this year. In that wave, active cases peaked on Sept. 20 at 7,927.

The newest deaths brought the pandemic total to 2,355. They included one person 40-49, one person 50-59, one person 60-69, one person 70-79 and two people 80 or older. Three were women and three men.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients held steady at 248. Of those 61 were receiving intensive care and 29 were on ventilators, both decreases from the previous day.

The latest infections took the statewide total to 167,759. Thursday's report included 159 new infections in Minnehaha County, 42 in Lincoln County, 25 in Brown County, 17 in Codington County and 53 in Pennington County.

An additional 2,249 state residents received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine through the Department of Health's vaccination program.
