Additional federal pandemic unemployment benefit payment delayed in New York after glitch

Unemployed New Yorkers who claimed unemployment benefits this week were shocked to find their additional $600 federal pandemic payments had not been processed.

According to the Department of Labor, an update to its claim system created a glitch and caused a delay in the release of the supplemental payments.

The department said Monday that the glitch had been fixed and claimants could expect to see the monies in their accounts later this week.

Regular New York state unemployment benefits and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance payments were not affected.

The additional payments, which were authorized as part of the CARES Act, have been credited with keeping many Americans financially afloat during the coronavirus pandemic. However, unemployed New Yorkers expected to be able to claim the additional funds until the end of July. Federal legislators are expected to negotiate a second stimulus package but it is unknown if supplemental unemployment benefits will be a part.

According to the Department of Labor, the unemployment rate in New York state rose to 15.7% in June despite adding nearly 300,000 jobs.
