ADM girls soccer prepares for the season, boys track runs at Central College

The ADM girls soccer team is getting ready for another successful season, with practice getting underway a week ago.

Although the weather pushed practice inside and it was spring break, head coach Jeff Abbas said a little under half of the team showed for the first week and the girls are excited to get the season started.

“They’re just really looking forward to getting back at it,” Abbas said. “[They were] very good sessions, high enthusiasm, had lots of fun, it was a good time.”

The Tigers are returning a number of experienced players from last year’s roster, which will bring an advantage to the team, as Abbas said the girls bring a wealth of leadership and have already built that team chemistry.

He added that those returners also have high expectations and goals after their double overtime loss in last year’s playoffs.

“We’ve set our goals high, we want to get back to the state tournament and we believe that this is the year that we’re going to do it and we have the willpower and the determination to do that,” Abbas said.

He added that the girls are willing to put in the work to achieve their goals and it’s not hard to motivate this group.

Though Abbas said the team is looking forward to proving themselves and proving that last year wasn’t a one-time deal, he is also looking forward to seeing how far the Tigers can go.

“We’ve had these first two years with me as the head coach adjusting to post-COVID and post-Van Meter, and making this program truly Adel DeSoto Minburn,” Abbas said. “And our goal is to leave a mark and to make a name for ADM and make it to the state tournament.”

To prepare for a postseason run, Abbas said he has intentionally toughened up ADM’s schedule with state qualifier teams right off the bat.

ADM will begin the season against teams such as Norwalk, North Polk and DCG, and Abbas said facing teams better than them will only help the Tigers improve.

The Tigers kick off the season against Norwalk at 7 p.m. March 27 at Norwalk High School.
