The ADM boys soccer team has gotten its season started with a couple weeks of practice now in the books.

Head coach Tom Horton said the Tigers have had about four full days of practice with spring break taking place the first week practice started, but that it has gone well and the team has been focused and working hard.

Though the team has only had a few practices together, ADM has already had a scrimmage against Waukee on March 24.

Horton said the things the team has been working on, such as playing in possession and keeping their shape, all showed on the field, so he was happy with the result.

This season will be Horton’s first as ADM’s head coach, however he has spent the past 18 years with the team as an assistant coach, which he said helps as he knows most of the team and the program.

“My starters on varsity and the varsity squad in general and JV players from last year know me, know what to expect, and so from that perspective, it’s been very beneficial and an easy transition,” Horton said.

He added that he is looking forward to continuing everything he learned under former head coach Bill Shields and taking the next step as a program.

Horton said that includes winning a state title for ADM, and though he said that comes with different expectations and challenges, he believes this team is up for it.

First, however, the Tigers will have to get through another challenging schedule.

ADM will have about the same schedule as last season, but it will be packed, and Horton said he’ll have to manage minutes and help in the Tigers’ recovery.

“DCG is always going to be a tough matchup, they have a quality program so that’s always a game we look forward to every year, same with Gilbert, Bondurant as well,” Horton said. “So we definitely have a challenging schedule from that perspective.”

The Tigers will kick off their season against North Polk at 7 p.m. March 28 at ADM High School.
