Another Lake Country school district will have to find a new superintendent for the next school year.

Ryan Krohn, who has been the superintendent of the Stone Bank School District in northwestern Waukesha County for four years, announced his resignation in a March 29 letter to the Stone Bank School Board. His resignation will become effective June 30.

"Over these last four years, many things have changed for me both personally and professionally and I believe now is the time for me to better align with some new priorities," Krohn said in his letter.

In an April 5 phone interview, Krohn said he was leaving Stone Bank to accept the superintendent role in the K-12 Palmyra-Eagle School District, where he will also do teaching and learning work. His first day with his new district will be July 1.

"Personally, I've got some changes going on in my life with my kids moving on to colleges and things like that, so that was there. Professionally, K-8's are a little smaller. They afford a really great opportunity for relationships, but a K-12 has some of those bigger feels of a full school system, from high schools and teams and activities, some community connecting pieces that are intriguing," Krohn said.

Krohn said he is confident the school board will find a "strong successor."

Krohn will replace interim Superintendent Todd Gray at Palmyra-Eagle, who has been working part time for the district.

Gray, who previously served as superintendent in the Waukesha School District, said he would continue with Palmyra-Eagle as a "limited, part-time consultant in the area of business operations."

"As the years have gone by, (the) Palmyra-Eagle Area School District has been flourishing and now needs a full-time Superintendent to come on board as new programs are created and to further strengthen existing academic programming along with other student opportunities," Gray said in an emailed statement.

Gray said Krohn brings "a wealth of knowledge and experience with both large and small school districts."

Fourth area superintendent to resign recently

Krohn is the fourth Lake Country-area superintendent to resign in the last five months.

On Feb. 14, K-8 Swallow School District Superintendent Melissa Thompson announced her resignation in a letter to the school board. Thompson declined at the time to elaborate on the reasons for her resignation.

On Jan. 16, K-8 Hartland-Lakeside School District Superintendent Nancy Nikolay submitted her resignation to the school board. Nikolay also declined to comment at the time on her reasons for resigning.

In December 2022, Arrowhead Union High School District Superintendent Laura Myrah announced her retirement from the district effective in August, citing the increased politicization in schools as her reason for retiring.

Stone Bank is a K-8 school district in Stone Bank in northwestern Waukesha County. The district, which operates out of a single school, has an enrollment of 279 as of the third Friday in September 2022, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction's database.
