Adnan Syed Leaves Baltimore Court After Judge Vacates Murder Conviction

A Baltimore Circuit Judge approved a motion to vacate the murder conviction of Adnan Syed on Monday, September 19, according to official documents.

Syed, age 41, was convicted of murder in 1999 following the death of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee but always maintained his innocence, according to local news reports.

According to the official documents, Baltimore Circuit Judge Melissa Phinn approved the motion to vacate the murder conviction “in the interest of justice and fairness.”

The documents said Syed would be placed in home detention, and the state will either set a new trial date or abandon the case.

Footage captured by Laurie Lawhorn shows Syed walking out of the courthouse in Baltimore, Maryland, as cheers erupt from the large crowd gathered outside.
