ADOC: St. Clair prison assaults that hospitalized two were 'related'

Two men had to be taken to a hospital after they were assaulted in what the Alabama Department of Corrections called a pair of "related" incidents at St. Clair Correctional Facility last week.

The victims were Desmonte Leonard, 34, and Jamarkous Antonio Coleman, 33, a spokesperson for the ADOC said in an email. The men are believed to still be alive and updates on their condition are forthcoming, ADOC said.

ADOC did not release the names of the suspected assailants.

The department said Leonard was assaulted in his cell on Friday, and Coleman was assaulted afterward "in a related incident." The spokesperson couldn't explain how the incidents were related because the incident is under investigation by ADOC's Law Enforcement Services Division.

Leonard, Coleman and the suspects in the assaults were taken to the prison infirmary for medical evaluation and treatment, ADOC said.

One of the assault suspects was treated for a minor injury and the other was uninjured. Leonard and Coleman had each sustained multiple injuries that required a "higher level of care," so they were transported to an area hospital for treatment, ADOC said.
