Who is Adrian Autry, Syracuse basketball's new head coach replacing Jim Boeheim?

Syracuse has named its first new men's basketball head coach since 1976. He's another alum.

Adrian "Red" Autry, 51, will supplant Jim Boeheim after the athletic department announced the Hall of Fame coach is done after 47 seasons at the helm.

The former Syracuse point guard will become the eighth full-time head coach, and first African-American head coach, in the history of the program, which began in 1900.

Autry has been an assistant coach with the Orange for a dozen years. ESPN ranked him No. 5 on its list of top assistant coaches 40 and under one season into his tenure with Syracuse in 2012.

Autry will need to fill out a roster that has only one 2023 recruiting commitment. Fellow Syracuse alums Gerry McNamara and Allen Griffin are on the coaching staff.

Autry was a star player at Syracuse

Autry was highly recruited out of St. Nicholas of Tolentine in The Bronx. where he headlined the top team in the country, won a New York state championship and was named a McDonald's All-American.

He was an instant starter for the Orange and led the team in assists in each of his four seasons from 1990-1994. Autry made the Big East All-Rookie Teams as freshman and was a First-Team All-Big East member as a senior, when he averaged 16.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.6 steals.

His teams were 91-32 with three NCAA Tournament appearances and one Sweet 16 berth over his four-year career. He scored all 31 points in the second half of that Sweet 16 game against Missouri in 1994, an NCAA Tournament record for points in a half.

Autry currently ranks fifth in career assists (631) and sixth in career steals (217) for Syracuse.

He played pro ball for a decade before coaching

Autry was not drafted in the NBA but had a 10-year professional career overseas and in the United States Basketball League. He played in Turkey, Germany, Italy, France, Siberia, Belgium, Poland, Russia and Venezuela.

Autry almost coached at Dayton instead of Syracuse

Autry began his coaching career in 2006 as an associate head coach at Bishop Ireton Catholic High School in Alexandria, Virginia and then nearby at Paul VI High School. He led a couple of AAU teams before landing his first college position.

Autry became Virginia Tech's director of basketball operations under Seth Greenberg in 2008. He spent two yeras in that role before being promoted to to assistant coach for a season. Autry was slated to become University of Dayton's associate head coach in 2011 but Syracuse had a sudden assistant coach opening. Rob Murphy left the Orange for the head coaching job at Eastern Michigan University and Boeheim plucked Autry for his staff before his former player went to Dayton. Autry's first season as an assistant at Syracuse was 2011-12. He was promoted to associate head coach of the Orange in 2017.

Autry is credited with helping develop NBA draft picks Jerami Grant, Tyler Ennis, Oshae Brissett, Tyler Lydon and Chris McCullough at Syracuse.

His son Trey Autry is committed to George Washington University

Autry and his wife, Andrea, have four children: sons Trey and Adrian Jr., and daughters Aliyah and Nina. Aliyah and Adrian Jr. graduated from Syracuse while their dad was a coach.

Trey is a three-star recruit in the class of 2023 and committed to George Washington University in October. He played at Jamesville-Dewitt before transferring to Western Reserve Academy in Ohio.
