ADRIAN — Bohn Pool will now open for the summer on June 26, but swimmers may find the water to be a bit chillier than in the past.

The pool's opening has been delayed by a recent boiler failure and some other mechanical issues. Because of that, the water will not be heated and admission to the pool will be free to Adrian residents and Adrian Public Schools students and families, upon verification of residency, a news release from the city said.

When it opens, the pool will operate for seven days a week, however, capacity may be limited at times depending upon staffing, the release said. Daily updates on capacity limits, availability and water temperature will be posted to the Adrian Parks and Recreation Facebook page.

Bohn Pool will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. It will not be available for rentals.

The optimal water temperature for a pool is 78-82 degrees, according to information previously presented by Jeremiah Davies, Adrian parks and recreation director. Because of the boiler malfunction, the water temperature at Bohn Pool is nearly 10-15 degrees below those ideal temperatures.

“You can operate a pool without a boiler,” he said during the Adrian City Commission’s June 5 meeting. “It will simply come down what users are willing to tolerate in regard to the pool temperature.”

Bohn Pool, located in Riverside Park, was constructed in 1972, and has become a regular topic on the city commission’s meeting agendas for the past several years. Commissioners and Davies have said the pool is “on its last legs.” Discussions have taken place about whether to keep repairing the pool or to investigate building a new facility.

For the past handful of summers, Bohn Pool has experienced various maintenance and equipment issues.

Davies said June 5 he is confident the pool can be safely opened for this year.

“We believe we can run (the pool) safely,” he said. “The water is clean.”
