Adrian College baseball drops MIAA tournament opener

KALAMAZOO — The Adrian College baseball team dropped its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament opener Wednesday, 7-6, at Kalamazoo College.

The Bulldogs started strong, but the game slipped away late as the Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the eighth and walked it off in the ninth.

No. 3-seed Adrian jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Gus Weaks RBI single and a Tommy Miller 2-run single in the third inning.

Michael Swanson tossed three shutout innings to begin the game, but ran into trouble in the fourth. He finished going three-plus innings and giving up three runs, on five and no walks while striking out one.

Gage Ricker wasn't able to preserve the lead in the fourth as the Hornets tied the game, but he kept the game tied and then tossed a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

Kevin Cardentey hit an RBI single to put Adrian back up, 4-3, in the sixth, but Kalamazoo responded with a run of its own. Ricker went 2 2/3 innings and gave up one run, on one hit and no walks.

Aaron Valentine drove in a 2-run single to give the Bulldogs a 6-4 lead heading into the eighth inning. Luc St. Antoine gave up two runs, on no hits and a walk to allow the Hornets to tie the game before Jacob Hanoian gave up an unearned run on a walk-off, 2-out single in the ninth.

Valentine went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run while Miller was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Easton Rogers was 2-for-4 with a double and a run, Weaks was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Cardentey was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run.

Adrian will take on Calvin at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hope College in an elimination game after the Knights fell to Hope, 2-1.

The winner of the Adrian-Calvin game will take on the loser of Hope-Kalamazoo game at 4 p.m. Thursday for a spot in the MIAA championship on Friday.
