Adrian College baseball stays alive in MIAA race with sweep of Alma
ADRIAN — The Adrian College baseball team stayed alive in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association race by sweeping Alma, 7-5 and 8-6, on Saturday.
The Bulldogs (19-15, 11-7 MIAA) dropped Game 1 of the three game series in Alma on Friday and cannot afford another loss if they hope to win a 13th-straight league title. Adrian must now sweep Kalamazoo next weekend and have Trine sweep Hope to win a share.
In the opener Saturday, Joe Toth was solid on the mound as he went 5 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, on three hits and four walks while striking out seven.
Gage Ricker ended up getting the win as the Scots went up 4-3 in the sixth inning, only for Adrian to rally in the bottom half for two runs and hold on for the win. Ricker went 1 2/3 innings and gave up a hit and got a strikeout.
Jacob Hanoian got his fifth save of the season as he tossed the ninth and got a strikeout.
Ryan Davis was 2-for-4 with a double an RBI while Don Goodes was 2-for-3 with two runs, Dylan Johnson went 2-for-4 and Aaron Valentine went 2-for-5 and Gus Weaks hit a triple.
In Game 2, Maxwell Denny went three-plus innings and gave up two runs, on four hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Luc St. Antoine got Adrian out of a jam in the fourth and ended up going three innings and giving up three hits and no walks while striking out three.
Hanoian picked up save No. 6 as he tossed the ninth with a hit, walk and strikeout while finishing the game fielding a comebacker and throwing to home and then first for a double play.
AJ Miranda went 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI while Goodes went 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and a run. Ty Peck was 2-for-5 with an RBI double and two runs while Weaks had a double of his own and Davis hit an RBI double.
With the wins, head coach Craig Rainey is now at 751 wins all-time.
Siena Heights at Lourdes (DH): At Sylvania, Ohio, the Saints wrapped up the final Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader with a split against Lourdes, falling 1-0 and winning 4-2.
In the win, Parker Swartz went eight innings and giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Kenny Layman went an inning with a strikeout for the save.
Cameron Hammer went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.
Chase Molnar took the loss in Game 1 as he went six innings and gave up a run, on four hits and a walk while striking out four.
The Saints (18-32) were held to one hit in the loss.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Indiana Tech 11, Siena Heights 1: At Fort Wayne, Ind., the Saints were shutout through the first three periods of the WHAC championship matchup as Indiana Tech won the title.
SHU (10-6) scored its lone goal with Jake Gallaher scoring on an assist from Eric Csizmadia. Vinnie Jean made 28 saves.
SOFTBALL
Kalamazoo 8, Adrian 3: At Kalamazoo, the Bulldogs dropped Game 1 of their final MIAA doubleheader of the season before Game 2 was suspended to Sunday.
Macee Shang took the loss as she went 2 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out one for Adrian (10-25, 4-11 MIAA).
Hailey DeChalk hit a double as the Bulldogs were held to five hits.
