Adrian College ranks highly in U.S. News and World Report ratings

ADRIAN — Adrian College is ranked No. 2 among the 2022-23 Most Innovative Schools for Regional Colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News & World Report and No. 3 in Best Undergraduate Teaching.

Adrian College is listed by the media company in its best “Regional Colleges, Midwest” section for the ninth consecutive year, placing in a tie for 19th with Dakota Wesleyan College in Mitchell, South Dakota. U.S. News & World Report also ranked Adrian College No. 12 in Best Value Schools, its ninth consecutive ranking; No. 21 in First Year Experience; and No. 42 in Top Performers in Social Mobility.

Other schools that ranked in the midwest regional college category included Trine University in Angola, Indiana, at No. 18, Alma College in Alma at No. 14, and Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, at No. 2. Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri, was No. 1.

College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri, was No. 1 in the most innovative category.

Now in its 38th year, the U.S. News & World Report rankings evaluate more than 1,450 colleges and universities.

The Most Innovative Schools designation recognizes colleges and universities that are making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, students, campus life, technology or facilities.

Adrian College President Jeffrey Docking said the most important thing Adrian College can do for its students and community is to inspire a culture of innovation and critical thinking.

“Adrian College recognizes the need for students to be fueled by innovative academic programs, forward-thinking projects, and inspirational surroundings,” Docking said in a news release. “It is very gratifying to see Adrian College recognized by national publications and peer colleges as a distinctive and innovative educational leader in the United States.”

Christine Knaggs, AC's dean of graduate studies and institutional effectiveness, was excited to see Adrian College improved on its ranking for Undergraduate Teaching and moved up two positions, the release said.

“We have dedicated faculty who deliver high quality education, and engage our students in a variety of experiential learning and classroom experiences, including internships, research, and study abroad opportunities,” Knaggs said.

Siena Heights University ranked 104th in Regional Universities Midwest, 61st in Social Mobility and 610th in Nursing. The top midwest regional university was Butler University in Indianapolis. The top nursing school was the University of Pennsylvania. The University of Michigan's nursing school was fourth.

The Social Mobility category looks at schools' enrollment of economically disadvantaged students. The No. 1 school in that category was Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minnesota.

To determine which colleges and universities offer the best values for students, U.S. News & World Report factors academic quality and cost after accounting for total expenses and financial aid, the release said.

U.S. News publishes the Best Colleges rankings each year to provide prospective students and their families with helpful data and information on factors such as graduation rates, social mobility and graduate indebtedness.

“For nearly 40 years, the Best Colleges methodology has continuously evolved to reflect changes in the higher education landscape and the interests of prospective students,” Kim Castro, editor and chief content officer at U.S. News, said in the release. “Guiding that evolution is U.S. News’ mission of providing useful data and information to help with one of life’s biggest decisions.”
