Adrian College women's hockey wins fifth-straight

ADRIAN — The Adrian College women's hockey team won its fifth-straight game Saturday as it beat Trine, 7-1, in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association matchup.

Jessica VonRuden scored a hat trick in the win for the Bulldogs (5-1, 3-0 NCHA), which included the first two goals of the game. VonRuden scored her first goal at the 6:32 mark on an assist from Karmen Anderson before Sydney Daversa assisted VonRuden on a shorthanded goal at the 14:01 mark.

Following a Thunder goal, Brooke Schembri scored one more first period goal off assists from Abbie Grias and Jocelin Hudanish.

In the second period, Grias and Une Bjellend each scored off assists from Schembri, Maya Roy and two from Callie Wollschlager.

In the third, Hudanish scored off assists from Wollschlager and Grias before VonRuden scored the final goal to give her a hat trick with assists from Bjelland and Schembri.

Sophie Goldberg got the win in net as she stopped 16 shots as the Bulldogs outshot Trine, 46-17.

Since the season-opening loss to Oswego State, Adrian has outscored opponents 30-2.

MEN'S HOCKEY

Adrian 3, Trine 2: At Angola, Ind., the Adrian men's team has also won five-straight, including back-to-back 3-2 wins against the Thunder in NCHA play.

Adrian (5-1, 4-0 NCHA) scored three goals in the first period, two from Hunter Wendt, to create enough of a cushion to fend off Trine's comeback in the second and third periods.

Alessio Luciani assisted Wendt on both his first period goals, with Jaden Shields and Sam Ruffin also getting assists. Ryan Pitoscia scored what turned out to be the game-winner at the 18:03 mark off assists from Tyler Shetland and Brett Piper.

Nic Tallarico made 28 saves in the win.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Siena Heights 85, Cornerstone 62: At Adrian, after suffering their first loss of the season, the Saints bounced back to beat Cornerstone.

Peyton Banks and Anaya Powell each scored 20 points with Banks adding 15 rebounds for a double-double, three assists and three steals. Powell added four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Sha'kyia Parker had 19 points, an assist and a steal while E'Anna Won added 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block.

Tecumseh graduate Eva Alcock made her first collegiate start for SHU (6-1, 3-1 WHAC) and turned in eight points and five rebounds.

Manchester 72, Adrian 53: At Manchester, Ind., the Bulldogs dropped their second-straight game after a 2-1 start as Manchester pulled away in the third.

Adrian (2-3) trailed 16-13 after the first and 37-30 at the half, but Manchester outscored the Bulldogs in the third, 22-11, to take a 57-41 lead into the fourth.

Chelsea Palmer had 11 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double and added three blocks and an assist.

WOMEN'S WRESTLING

Adrian at Albion Invite: At Albion, the Bulldogs took second at the Albion Invite with a team score of 79 to trail only Gannon University's score of 99.5.

Adrian got three champions with Taylor Cutler, Megan Vondrasek and Carleigh Czerneski getting first in their weight classes.

Cutler went 5-0 at 170 pounds with four pins and a 3-1 decision against Annabelle Helm of Gannon.

Czerneski won at 116 as she went 3-0 with three pins while Vondrasek went 4-0 at 155 with three pins and a technical fall.

MEN'S WRESTLING

Adrian at Olivet Duals: At Olivet, the Bulldogs dropped the first two duals of the day before taking the final two to go 2-2 on the day.

Adrian lost to Millikin, 34-15, before falling to Ohio Northern, 22-9. The Bulldogs ended strong with a 30-10 win against Mount Union and beat St. Clair County Community College, 48-0.

Michael Jacobs (184) went 4-0 with two pins, a decision and by a forfeit.

Siena Heights at Albion Invite: At Albion, the Saints took 10th at the Albion Invite with 44.5 points on the day.

Randy Frailey was the top Saint on the day as he took fourth as he went 2-2, including a major decision.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Cornerstone 88, Siena Heights 60: At Adrian, the Saints dropped their sixth-straight game as Cornerstone took a 46-28 lead into the half and added on from there.

Kiewuan Graham scored 13 points and pulled down four rebounds in the loss while Curtis Bell III had 11 points and seven rebounds. Luis Young added 10 points and two assists off the bench.

Mount Union 97, Adrian 60: At Alliance, Ohio, the Bulldogs trailed the Purple Raiders, 40-30, at the half before Mount Union pulled away in the second half.

Adrian (1-3) was led by Jesse Lawson Jr.'s 12 points, six rebounds and a block.
