ITV has confirmed that Ridley, starring Line of Duty actor Adrian Dunbar, will return for a second season.

The detective series debuted on ITV in 2022, with Dunbar playing the title role of retired Detective Inspector Alex Ridley, who tragically lost his wife and daughter in an arson attack on the family home.

The series averaged an audience of 6.3 million over the four episodes and marked ITV's fourth biggest new drama launch that year.

Following its success, ITV has commissioned a second season of Ridley, promising more crime-solving in a further four two-hour films.

"There can be no greater endorsement of hard work and talent than the recommission of a series, and to that end we have to thank ITV and the British public for taking to Ridley in such numbers," said Dunbar.

"We shall certainly work just as hard to keep the standard we have set and I look forward to developing Ridley as a character over the next four episodes."

Ridley season two will also see the return of DI Carol Farman (played by Unforgotten's Bronagh Waugh), Ridley's protégée and work partner.

Dunbar is in safe hands for season two, with the four new episodes written by Vera show writers Paul Matthew Thompson and Michael Bhim, alongside Midsomer Murders writer Julia Gilbert.

Thompson is also signed on to executive produce, alongside Ridley co-creator Jonathan Fisher and Ingrid Goodwin. Meanwhile Happy Valley's Juliet Charlesworth is returning as producer.

ITV drama commissioner Huw Kennair-Jones was delighted to green-light Ridley for a second series.

"We can't wait to welcome Adrian back to ITV as we return to the beautiful Lancashire countryside for four brand new cases for Ridley and the team to investigate. And we're looking forward to working with West Road Pictures and Paul Matthew Thompson on what promises to be another great series."

Ridley is now available in full on ITVX.
