ADRIAN — The home garden of Kim Baumea, 158 Budlong St. in Adrian, has been recognized as the Garden of the Month for May by the Adrian Women’s Garden Club. It is the first home garden to receive the monthly recognition for the garden club’s 2023 season.

Baumea didn’t start gardening until she bought her home 30 years ago, according to information provided by the Adrian Garden Club and representative Cheryl Lynch.

“She loves being outside and spends about three to five hours a week in her garden,” Lynch said in an email. “She finds gardening relaxing and the best stress reliever you can do. She loves to rescue the clearance sale plants at the Lowe’s Home Improvement store on Division Street.”

Between the months of May and September, the Adrian Women’s Garden Club selects homes around the Adrian community each year as the Garden of the Month. Those that are selected for the award are given a sign for the front lawn announcing that house as the Garden of the Month.

Lynch said Baumea’s favorite perennial is the Asiatic lily.

“She uses light purple phlox as an accent perennial around her front tree and garden bench,” added Lynch. “Her annual flowers are shades of red, pink and purple, and she loves to do different annuals every year. The ferns on the side of the house are low maintenance and do well in the shady part of the yard. Her high maintenance flowers are her annuals, but they give an instant color to her garden.”
