Adrian's 'Art and Soul' will be on exhibit downtown during September First Fridays

ADRIAN — Downtown Adrian’s art and soul will be on exhibit today beginning at 5 p.m. as part of the city’s September edition of First Fridays, titled “Art and Soul.”

Festivities and promotions throughout the streets of downtown Adrian are expected to continue through 9 p.m.

The Adrian Art Discovery tour is one of several happenings scheduled. The art tour will allow guests to check out the new public art sculptures throughout downtown Adrian. There also are several live music performances scheduled either on the streets or at local restaurants and bars.

First Fridays also features the Adrian Cruise-In car show, sponsored by Nova’s Soda Pop Candy Shop; crafters and vendors at the Adrian Farmers Market Pavilion; and a monthly focus of shopping local and supporting small businesses.

In preparation of this evening’s event, several downtown streets will be closed to motorists beginning at 2:30 p.m. today and will reopen at 11 p.m. Street closures will be:

  • West Maumee Street, between North Broad and North Winter streets.

  • South Main Street, between West Church and East Front streets.

  • Washburn Street, a half-block closure to North Main Street.

  • Toledo Street, a half-block closure to North Main Street.

  • Toledo Street parking lot.

Tink & The Frog Yarn Shop, 117 N. Main St., is the September First Fridays sponsor, a news release from the city of Adrian, said. The crafting and yarn shop will have 20% off class signups and 40% off discontinued yarn.

The entertainment lineup consists of the following performances:

  • 6 to 8 p.m., The Metros Band with Gordy Sharpe at the corner of South Main and East Church streets.

  • 7 to 9 p.m., Bille Lewis and the Soulbacks at the corner of South Main and Toledo streets.

  • 7:30 to 10:30 p.m., Grace Theisen at Mammoth Distilling, 108 E. Maumee St.

  • 7 p.m. to midnight, DJ STE at the Brick Wall Pub & Grill, 114 W. Maumee St.

  • Jim Rice Group at Hooligan’s Grill, 113 E. Maumee St.

  • 9 p.m., karaoke at Club 109, 109 S. Main St. The bar will also have free pool games beginning at 5 p.m.

  • Free bounce houses and other inflatables for kids at the Toledo Street pavilion, along with the Adrian City Market and food trucks.

  • The Randy P. Hill Post No. 1957 American Veterans (AMVETS), 122 N. Main St., will host a cornhole tournament behind Copeland Furniture on North Main Street.

  • Those of legal drinking age are also invited to take advantage of Adrian’s social district, which is now open until 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. While in the social district, adults can enjoy alcoholic beverages marked in special cups while walking around downtown.

Businesses will also have several activities and specials as part of First Fridays. The following downtown businesses have shared their promotions with the city of Adrian:

  • The Marks Trading Co., 220 N. Main St., will have its grand opening celebration and will have buy-one-get-one-free specials on spice jars. Samples will also be available.

  • Bohmey Beauty, 128 N. Main St., is marking the grand opening of its Bohmey Refinery and Sustainable Shop. Customers will be treated to 10% off all refinery items as well as giveaways, vegan treats and an expanded product selection to check out.

  • Nova’s Soda Pop Candy Shop, 105 E. Church St., will have Hot Wheels races at 6:30 p.m. along with free popcorn, face painting and a visit from the Funky Dawgs food truck.

  • Fall flavors have been released this week at Musgrove and Co., 110 W. Maumee St., including the pumpkin pie latte and the s’mores cream cold brew.

  • The Tuscan orange grove cocktail will be on special for $8 at Chaloner’s Cigar House, 108 W. Maumee St. Chaloner and Co., meanwhile, will have 20% off desktop humidors and a promotion where customers can buy any three cigars and receive one select cigar for free, while supplies last.

  • Hilltop Counseling, 115 W. Maumee St., will be open for community conversations as part of its “Community United in Love” event.

  • Downtown Dempsey’s, 136 E. Maumee St., inside the Gallery of Shops, is unveiling its new spinach artichoke bread in addition to new varieties of pizzas, subs and desserts.

  • Pat Cooper Studios, 130 N. Main St., will have artwork for sale, some pieces as low as $10. Some original pieces of work will be marked at discounted prices. Refreshments will also be available.

  • Brenda’s Lil Taste of Texas, 104 Toledo St., will have three corn shell tacos filled with beef or chicken for $6 and two flour tacos for $6. Doritos walking tacos will be $6, as are elotes (Mexican corn in a cup). Bottled water will be $2 each.

  • Sass, 114 E. Maumee St., will have 15% off everything in the store, and customers can be treated to a speciality beverage with any purchase. The Lenawee Humane Society will be selling catnip mice inside the gift shop.

  • Customers shopping at The Buzz Cafe and Marketplace, 110 E. Maumee St., can receive 10% off their total purchase price when they show a receipt from another downtown business. The Buzz will have pop-up specials throughout its store featuring clean-eating baked goods.

  • Tarot readings and reiki sessions are available to the public at Ghidrah’s Mystic She Ways, 120 E. Maumee St.

  • Passion 4 Fashion Boutique, 143 N. Main St., is offering 15% off all products in the store, excluding Brighton products, as well as 70% off summer clearance items. Refreshments will be available.

  • Nutrition 365, 110 N. Main St., is offering $1 off teas and shakes. Since the fall season is nearly here, mini pumpkin roll shakes are now in stock. Small business vendors are encouraged to stop into the health/nutrition bar and share in conversation with other small business owners/vendors.
