Advanced Medical Solutions Group plc (LON:AMS) Analysts Are More Bearish Than They Used To Be

In this article:

Today is shaping up negative for Advanced Medical Solutions Group plc (LON:AMS) shareholders, with the analysts delivering a substantial negative revision to this year's forecasts. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) estimates were cut sharply as analysts factored in the latest outlook for the business, concluding that they were too optimistic previously.

Following the latest downgrade, the current consensus, from the six analysts covering Advanced Medical Solutions Group, is for revenues of UK£90m in 2020, which would reflect an uncomfortable 12% reduction in Advanced Medical Solutions Group's sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are supposed to tumble 33% to UK£0.059 in the same period. Prior to this update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of UK£100m and earnings per share (EPS) of UK£0.068 in 2020. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a considerable drop in earnings per share numbers as well.

Despite the cuts to forecast earnings, there was no real change to the UK£2.87 price target, showing that the analysts don't think the changes have a meaningful impact on its intrinsic value. There's another way to think about price targets though, and that's to look at the range of price targets put forward by analysts, because a wide range of estimates could suggest a diverse view on possible outcomes for the business. The most optimistic Advanced Medical Solutions Group analyst has a price target of UK£3.35 per share, while the most pessimistic values it at UK£2.45. These price targets show that analysts do have some differing views on the business, but the estimates do not vary enough to suggest to us that some are betting on wild success or utter failure.

Of course, another way to look at these forecasts is to place them into context against the industry itself. These estimates imply that sales are expected to slow, with a forecast revenue decline of 12%, a significant reduction from annual growth of 11% over the last five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in the same industry are forecast to see their revenue grow 4.5% annually for the foreseeable future. It's pretty clear that Advanced Medical Solutions Group's revenues are expected to perform substantially worse than the wider industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their earnings per share estimates, expecting a clear decline in business conditions. Regrettably, they also downgraded their revenue estimates, and the latest forecasts imply the business will grow sales slower than the wider market. We're also surprised to see that the price target went unchanged. Still, deteriorating business conditions (assuming accurate forecasts!) can be a leading indicator for the stock price, so we wouldn't blame investors for being more cautious on Advanced Medical Solutions Group after the downgrade.

Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. At Simply Wall St, we have a full range of analyst estimates for Advanced Medical Solutions Group going out to 2022, and you can see them free on our platform here.
