Potawatomi artist Jason Wesaw opens exhibit at Civil Rights Heritage Center

SOUTH BEND — The exhibit “Contemplation and Movement” opens with a reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 20 and continues through Dec. 16 at the Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center, 1040 W. Washington St.

A solo exhibition by Jason Wesaw, “Contemplation and Movement” brings out some of the beautiful, quiet tales that have been told in the Great Lakes by his tribal ancestors.

Familiar and personal but with a universal perspective that asks the viewer to observe how nature organizes and influences us, Wesaw’s works are informed by the land and relate stories that are rooted in place and the acknowledgment of spirit.

A member of the Potawatomi Nation (Turtle Clan), Wesaw balances being a maker with working in his tribal community as a Peacemaker, sustaining cultural ceremonies and sharing traditional knowledge across the Great Lakes.

His works are part of the permanent collections of the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, Grand Valley State University in Michigan and the Newberry Library in Chicago.

Bruce Katz plays The Acorn in Three Oaks with new band members

THREE OAKS — The Bruce Katz Band and Resurrection Blues Band perform at 8 p.m. Oct. 21 at The Acorn, 107 Generations Drive.

A blues, soul-jazz and New Orleans-inspired roots musician, Katz plays the Hammond B-3 and piano and has released 11 albums as a leader and appeared on more than 75 other albums by artists such as John Hammond, Delbert McClinton, Ronnie Earl, Little Milton, Butch Trucks, Duke Robillard, David “Fathead” Newman and many others.

He has also had a strong musical connection with the Allman Brothers Band and was a member of Gregg Allman’s band for six years (2007-2013), Jamoe’s Jasssz Band (2010-2015), Butch Trucks’ Freight Train Band and Les Brers (2015-2017). Katz also occasionally toured with the Allman Brothers as well.

New members Aaron Lieberman (God Street Wine) on guitar and vocals and Liviu Pop (Lucky Peterson) on drums have added a new dimension to the band.

Michiana VegFest back for vegan sampling Oct. 23 at Century Center

SOUTH BEND — Michiana VegFest returns from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 23 to Century Center, 120 S. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

The event includes a range of vendors, speakers and samplings to learn more about plant-based eating, vegan lifestyles, compassion for animals and conservation of the environment.

The event includes cooking demos with free samples. Vendors will show off food, cosmetics, clothing and other goods that are made without animal ingredients.

Featured speakers include Dr. Alan Goldhamer, author of “Escaping the Pleasure Trap” and “Can Fasting Save Your Life?”; Glen Merzer, author of “A Convenient Truth”; and Robert Cheeke, author of “Building Vegan Muscle.”

Martin’s Super Markets is sponsoring four chef demonstrations, where attendees can get an up-close look at how a variety of healthy, vegan dishes are created. Featured chefs include: Jasmine Bradley of Vegan Bites by Jas; Chef AJ, cooking show host, author; Laura Crotty, culinary author; and Crystal Hallwood, Vegan Michiana demo chef.

SOUTH BEND — The Jewish Federation of St Joseph Valley presents Fall Fest 2022 from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 23 at 3202 Shalom Way.

The event includes a petting zoo, hayrides and pony rides, bounce houses and inflatables, carnival games, arts and crafts, axe throwing for adults, live music, kosher food and drink, and more.

‘Peppa Pig Live!’ has two shows Oct. 23 at the Blue Gate in Shipshewana

SHIPSHEWANA — Round Room Live and Hasbro present “Peppa Pig Live! Peppa Pig’s Adventure” at 1 and 5 p.m. Oct. 23 at Blue Gate Performing Arts Center, 760 S. Van Buren St.

In this 60-minute live musical show, Peppa Pig goes on an exciting camping trip in the woods with George and her school friends, including Pedro Pony, Suzy Sheep and Gerald Giraffe. With lunchboxes packed and Daddy Pig driving the bus, Peppa and friends are excited about their outdoor adventures, full of singing, dancing, games and surprises.
