Advocate Aurora, Beaumont Health Pull Out Of Merger Talks

DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Officials at Advocate Aurora Health and Beaumont Health ended their negotiations last week about a merger that would have created a $17 billion health care system covering Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

The two companies said in June that they were set to have “deeper discussions” about the merger after previously putting their talks on hold due to the coronavirus outbreak.

A spokesperson for Advocate Aurora Health said in June that the deal would have expanded patients’ access to services and experts while reducing costs.

Beaumont CEO John Fox said the deal could be finalized by the end of 2020, but the companies released a joint statement Friday announcing the end of their merger talks.

“We continue to have a very high regard for Advocate Aurora Health,” Fox said in the statement. “But at this time, we want to focus on our local market priorities and the physicians, nurses and staff who provide compassionate, extraordinary care every day.”

Advocate Aurora Health became one of the 10 largest not-for-profit health care systems in the U.S. when it formed in 2018 following the merger of Advocate Health Care and Aurora Health Care. Advocate Aurora employs more than 70,000 people in Illinois and Wisconsin, and Beaumont has about 38,000 employees in Michigan, according to the companies.
