Immigration advocates will gather in Newark on Friday as part of a National Day of Action, calling for the Biden administration to shut down all detention centers, release all people in detention and end deportations.

A march will start at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Gateway Center, between Raymond Boulevard and Market Street near Penn Station. The march will go from there to the Peter Rodino Federal Building on Broad Street, which houses the Newark office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, where participants in the march will rally.

The march and rally will be among actions in several locations nationwide, including New York City, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.

Protesters gathered in front of the Elizabeth Detention Center in Elizabeth on June 17 calling for the permanent shutdown of the facility that houses ICE detainees and for those detainees to be set free.

The Newark event will be hosted by faith leaders, community organizations and members of affected communities focusing on shutting down the Elizabeth Detention Center. The EDC is the last detention center in New Jersey used by ICE and can house up to 300 people.

Last month, a federal court judge upheld a preliminary injunction sought by prison company CoreCivic against a state ban that would have forced it to close the center. Gov. Phil Murphy and the state's attorney general, Matthew Platkin, are appealing the court's decision. Meanwhile, CoreCivic and ICE reached a contract extension for CoreCivic to operate the center for another year at a price of $19.9 million.
