A squirrel in a transformer was to blame for a power outage affecting about 2,560 customers Thursday morning in west Abilene, according to an AEP-Texas spokesman.

Within two minutes of 8:25 a.m., four outage areas were reported by AEP:

  • South Seventh Street and Pioneer Drive;

  • Hartford and Andy streets;

  • Winters Freeway and South 14 Street; and

  • South 14th Street and Pioneer Drive.

The traffic lights in those areas also were affected by the outage.

When intersection signal lights go dark, Texas law requires that drivers treat the intersection as a four-way stop, a city spokeswoman said.

Power was restored to the area before 10 a.m., according to the outage map.
